PCF: Please Come, Friends

Hello, friend!

I’ve got a fun fall announcement to share: I’ll be tabling at this year’s Prairie Comics Festival (PCF) in Winnipeg, happening September 6–7, 2025 at the Manitoba Museum (190 Rupert Ave). The show runs 10 AM to 5 PM Saturday, and 12 PM to 5 PM Sunday—and yes, admission is totally free!

Some folks might not know this, but my wife’s roots are actually in Saskatchewan, in the Blaine Lake/Saskatoon area. Over time, though, her siblings all randomly migrated, and one by one ended up settling—at least for a stretch—in Winnipeg. One of them’s now out west again, but the rest, including my wife’s parents, have stayed in Manitoba, so we’re in Winnipeg three or four times a year most years. And while that Saskatoon-to-Winnipeg drive is no small feat, we’ve gotten used to it. With more Co-op gas stations now dotting the route (meaning cleaner bathrooms and more slushes for the kids!), the trip’s actually become something we look forward to. Our kids are seasoned travelers now, and honestly, those 9-10 hours in the car with my wife? Sometimes that’s the best part of the trip—just talking, catching up, doing trivia cards, and watching the prairie light shift as the miles roll by.

Over the years, through family visits and past events like the late, great C4 convention, I’ve been lucky enough to make some wonderful friends in the Winnipeg comics scene. It’s a city that’s come to feel really familiar and welcoming, and every visit is a mix of nostalgia, inspiration, and genuinely good food.

PCF is a newer show, and it’s cut from a cloth I love—more TCAF or VanCAF than pop-culture con. It’s creator-driven, meaning every exhibitor is an author, and fan art is a no-go (which, in this day and age, makes my heart sing). I deeply admire shows that prioritize storytelling, originality, and the craft of comics. Having had a blast at shows like TCAFVanCAF, and even Angoulême, I’m really curious what a prairie-focused show like PCF will feel like, and I’m pumped to meet new readers and fellow creators.

Debuting at PCF will be something brand-new: a greeting card I’ve illustrated, inspired by the vintage romance comics I lovingly skewer in my webcomic Don’t Know (Maybe So). I’ve had a lot of encouragement to get into the greeting card game, so this will be the first little foray: thank-you cards that will be available for purchase at the show.

Can you even imagine how clearly someone would feel your gratitude when you send them THIS thank you card?

And, of course, no trip to Winnipeg is complete without a burger crawl. With guidance from my in-laws, I’ve made it something of a mission to sample the city’s finest burgers on each trip. On my last visit, I finally tried VJ’s Drive Inn, and as of right now, it’s the reigning champion. So naturally, the artwork accompanying this post features yours truly, wandering downtown Winnipeg in a carb-induced haze after wolfing down a Fat Boy from VJ’s.

The Weakerthans were wrong about this place.

Winnipeg friends—this is your official heads-up that I’m coming to town! Come hang out at the show, bring me your burger recs, and see if you made the cut in the thank-yous in my last book (hint: you probably did). I’m excited to see familiar faces, meet new ones, and soak up all the prairie comic energy PCF has to offer.

See you in September!

Thanks for reading, I love you.
